Police issue more charges over sale of magic mushrooms at businesses

Waterloo Regional Police say they have arrested and charged two women from Cambridge with drug-related offences after completing search warrants at businesses in Cambridge and Kitchener in relation to the sale of magic mushrooms.

Police say earlier today members of the Direct Action Response Team (DART) executed search warrants in the areas of King Street East in Cambridge and Victoria Street South and Park Street in Kitchener.

Investigators seized a large quantity of psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms, in various forms and Canadian currency, police said in a news release.

A 19-year-old and a 32-year-old, both from Cambridge, were arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking and failure to comply with an undertaking, police said.

One of the accused parties was held for bail.

This is the second incident of magic mushrooms-related arrests in recent weeks.

In April, police charged a 23-year-old male and a 32-year-old female, both from Cambridge, with possession for the purpose of trafficking after search warrants were executed at businesses.

Waterloo Regional Police Service said that the sale (trafficking) of psilocybin is a criminal offence under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), as psilocybin is categorized as a Schedule III controlled substance.

Businesses engaged in selling these products are operating unlawfully, and the substances they offer are neither regulated nor subject to quality control measures, police said.
